You tip the vinegar onto the baking soda and the bowl comes alive. Foam climbs the sides. Bubbles race through the grime. For two or three seconds it looks exactly like cleaning happening in front of you.

Then you read the comment under the video. It does nothing. You are just making salt water. Four people agree, and not one of them explains why.

Here is the part that should bother you.

You have actually used this. And sometimes the sink really did come out cleaner. So both stories cannot be true. Either that foam is doing something, or something else in the bowl is doing it and you have been handing the credit to the wrong thing for years.

That is a solvable question. There are only a few suspects, and you can rule them out one at a time.

01Where the foam comes from

The foam is gas, and it comes out of the two ingredients rather than off your dirt. Start there, because it is the loudest thing in the bowl and the easiest suspect to rule out.

Vinegar is mostly water with a mild acid in it. Baking soda is a powder that cancels acid. Put them together and they trade. The acid gets used up, the powder gets used up, and the swap gives off carbon dioxide, the same gas that puts the fizz in a soda, according to the American Chemical Society.

That gas is your foam. That is the whole show.

Now look at where it came from. Not the grease. Not the chalky ring on the tap. It came out of the vinegar and out of the baking soda. So it is proof of something happening between those two, and it says nothing at all about your dirt.

Picture two people in a room settling a debt with each other. Loud, fast, over in seconds. Your sink was never part of that deal.

Cleaning is a physical job. Something has to reach the dirt and either dissolve it or drag it off. Acid dissolves chalky hard-water buildup. Grit scrapes stuck food loose. Soap and water and scrubbing lift grease and carry it down the drain. That is what the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention means by cleaning.

So cross the foam off the list. Which leaves the question you started with. Why did the sink come out cleaner?

02The leftover in the bottom of the bowl

The suspect most arguments miss is the ingredient that does not get used up. Nobody measures this stuff, so one of the two always survives.

If you mixed exactly the matching amounts, both would be used up. What you would have left is water with a salt dissolved in it. Not table salt, but close enough to make the point. No sting left in the vinegar, no grit left in the powder. That is the mix the “it does nothing” crowd is describing, and in a lab they would be right.

Nobody does this in a lab. You pour until it looks right.

So one of them runs out first, and the other is still sitting there when the noise stops. Pour too much vinegar and the puddle is still acid, and acid still works on hard-water buildup. Pour too much baking soda and gritty powder settles at the bottom, and grit still scrubs.

The mix is not nothing, then. It is one working ingredient plus a lot of theatre.

Before you close the case, though, count what else you did in those two minutes. Hot water. Waiting. Scrubbing. Rinsing. The leftover ingredient. The foam. Six things happened at once, and the foam is the only one you could see.

Any of the other five could be your culprit. That is why the trail goes cold here, and it is worth saying plainly: I could not find a study that put the mix head to head against vinegar alone, baking soda alone, dish soap, and plain water. The reaction itself is settled science. The cleaning claim has never been properly tested. Untested is not the same as proven wrong.

03When you pour the mix down a drain

Pouring vinegar and baking soda down a drain is the version of this trick with the weakest alibi of all.

Foam can only push on something if it is trapped. A drain is open at the top and joins vented pipes below, so the gas takes the easy way out. Up, and into the room.

And a clog is not one thing. Hair. Soap scum. Cold grease. Hard-water buildup. A bottle cap somebody dropped. Five different problems with five different weak spots. A few seconds of foam does not eat through any of them.

So when the sink does run better afterwards, walk it backwards. The hot water you poured in after probably flushed something that was already coming loose. The baking soda you poured in first may have scrubbed near the opening. Either one explains it without the foam doing a thing.

Treat it as a maybe, not a fix. It does not replace pulling the hair out, checking what the manufacturer recommends for your fixture, or calling someone when a drain keeps blocking.

04Which jar to reach for

Once you stop asking whether the vinegar-and-baking-soda mix works, and start asking what the mess is made of, the choice gets easy. Two questions. What is the dirt made of, and what is underneath it?

New Mexico State University’s guide to home cleaning products says the same thing in fewer words. Baking soda is a grit. Mild acids dissolve hard-water buildup. Two tools, two jobs. Mix them together and you blunt both of them before either one gets near the mess.

“Natural” tells you where something came from. It does not tell you what it is safe to touch. The Natural Stone Institute warns that vinegar and other acids dull and eat into marble, limestone and travertine, and that scouring powders scratch some stone. Read the care instructions, and test a spot nobody looks at.

Clean and germ-free are two different things as well. The US Environmental Protection Agency keeps them separate. Getting dirt off is one job. Killing bacteria and viruses is another, and anything sold to do the second has to prove it. A bowl of foam has proved nothing.

05Try this at the sink tonight

Pick the worst surface in your bathroom. Look at the mess before you reach for any bottle.

A chalky white ring around the tap, or a cloudy film on the shower glass, is hard-water buildup. Soak a paper towel in white vinegar. Press it flat so it stays wet against the ring. Leave it five minutes, then lift a corner and rub with your thumb. If it smears, re-wet the towel and give the rest the same five minutes. If nothing has changed after ten, vinegar is not the answer here, and leaving it longer will not help.

A greasy film on the stovetop or a cabinet door is not buildup, and acid will not touch it. Use dish soap in warm water, a cloth, and real pressure. Then rinse, so you are not just spreading the grease thinner.

Baked-on food or a stained basin wants grit. Mix baking soda with a little water into a thick paste, spread it on, wait ten minutes, then scrub with a pad that will not scratch. Stop the second the finish starts to look dull. On marble, limestone, travertine, or any coating you cannot name, test somewhere hidden first.

If a drain slows down again a few days after you clear it, that is a physical problem coming back. No amount of foam will out-argue it.

One safety rule beats every cleaning tip here. Never add vinegar to bleach. Poison Control warns that the two together can give off chlorine gas, which badly irritates your airways. Vinegar and baking soda give off carbon dioxide instead, which is harmless in an open room. Still mix it in an open bowl. Sealing it in a bottle traps the gas as it expands.

You were never wrong to trust your eyes. Something real did happen in that bowl. It just happened between the two cleaners, and neither one ever got to the thing you wanted gone.

Look at the mess first. Then pick the jar. Let the dirt decide.
